“The most important word on the internet is not “Search”. The most important word on the internet is ‘Share’. Sharing is the driver. Sharing is the DNA. We use Social Objects to share ourselves with other people.” - hugh macleod
Reading this post over on gapingvoid.com about Social Objects got me thinking about being a new media photographer… it’s a similar idea to the elevator pitch (short, communication, sharing), but it is distinct - it’s the viral arm of the NMP.
What is the Social Object of your business? If you haven’t thought about it, your first guess is probably wrong. It’s a safe bet that it’s not “pictures”. I don’t know what mine is yet, but I’ll be thinking about it very hard now.

I recently put an Asus EEE PC netbook to the test to see if it could handle demanding photo applications. Read it on my blog entry netbook for photographers.

Rob Haggart over at APhotoEditor.com has a great post about not under-valuing yourself. See if any of the arguments the customers use sound familiar…

My little place has been attempting to do everything for everyone. Long term of course this isnt’ going to work, so we are looking at reinventing ourselves. I think in reality this is something every business needs to consider in changing times. Who is your target, what do you WANT to do.
We’ve accepted an opportunity to partner with a young man who is going to be giving seminars on Social Media, and how it helps the individual and businesses. First step of this was to do a photo shoot for him to come up with his “image”, then I worked with him on a business card using those images, and came up with an Avatar, and a few business card options, and promotional images, that really show him in the light he wants to be seen in.
Now if you remember, I’m an ex-programmer/techy geek so this little endeavor was a blast, it used some of my skills that I don’t typically use in a “normal” photo shoot. Applying this FUN along with giving him photos he was exited not only to have but to use!!! was great. So how do I turn the studio around so that THIS is what I’m doing vs things I don’t really like doing (like young children, or whiney families that really aren’t interested).
We’ve looked at what I enjoying doing. Boudoir, Seniors, Maternity, Newborns, and now this Social Media stuffs. All of it has a common theme of telling a story and projecting a personal image of the subject.
Ok now that we’ve determined what I enjoy, and want to shoot, how do we describe it to the masses in a way that generates interest and of course business. So I’m looking for a one word description that encompasses all of the above. Currently thinking about Reflection or Essence or Perception or Vision coupled with the word Photography to describe all those different types. At the moment Perception is edging toward the top for me, since they all encompass what someone wants the perception of themselves to be.
This is our first step toward Marketing! Your input appreciated
