“The most important word on the internet is not “Search”. The most important word on the internet is ‘Share’. Sharing is the driver. Sharing is the DNA. We use Social Objects to share ourselves with other people.” - hugh macleod

Reading this post over on gapingvoid.com about Social Objects got me thinking about being a new media photographer… it’s a similar idea to the elevator pitch (short, communication, sharing), but it is distinct - it’s the viral arm of the NMP.

What is the Social Object of your business? If you haven’t thought about it, your first guess is probably wrong. It’s a safe bet that it’s not “pictures”. I don’t know what mine is yet, but I’ll be thinking about it very hard now.

What is a network? Is it the people you’re linked to? Is it people with a common interest or vocation? Is people you communicated with in the past? I see postings in the LinkedIn groups all the time - or any social networking site, really - saying “I want to expand my network; please add me!” I have to think to myself, “And then what?” Will we actually connect and communicate? Or will I just be another semi-anonymous ‘me too’ who has the pleasure of watching your status updates?

My networks tend to be pretty small on these sites, because I draw a distinction between people I want to watch and people I actually have a networking relationship with - even if the relationship is slim or old. But in this day and age of the easy “friend” list, I think we’re in danger of losing the social aspect of social networking.

I commented on LinkedIn, and thought I might get good feedback here:

Microsoft’s Pro Photo Tools has the ability to append GPS data to image files; I’d be interested to know if anyone has used this, and what is a iPhone tool to collect and output the GPS data in a compatable format

Browsing the iPhone app store this morning, I came across an app for PhanFare.com - anyone familiar with it? It’s a photo archive/sharing site which includes an unlimited storage plan for just under $60US annually.

Although I’ve held back from this kind of portal before, the ability to store and access albums directly from the iPhone (one of my big reasons for having one…) makes this an attractive service. If you’ve had any experience with them, reply in the comments below

As I sit and get caught up on all the great blogs I’ve discovered over the past few days, I am reminded again of the dangers of assumption…

Not every blog reader supports embedded YouTube videos (or what have you)… If you really want your readers to see the content, be sure to include a simple link to it as well!

Rosh mentioned Google Analytics a few days ago… the plug-in WPTouch is well designed with a field where you can enable GA by entering your code right in the plug-in setup, but you can get the same effect by editing your footer.php pages (usually found in your theme’s folder). Just remember to place it above the /BODY tag so GA knows where to find it.
